But a… Samaritan… took pity on him… Go, and do… likewise
The Local Missions Ministry Of Shoal Creek Baptist Church, LaGrange, GA 30241

The concept for The Good Sam Ministry of SCBC was birthed through a door of opportunity that has opened unto us in one of our local elementary schools (Hillcrest), where we discovered an ongoing concern that some students are lacking in even the most basic school necessities that most of us take for granted (adequate clothing, school supplies, back packs, etc.)… In this situation, our desire is to come along side of our school teachers and counselors and assist them in meeting as many of these needs as the Lord so graciously provides the resources for us to do so…

Therefore, our initial plan for The Good Sam Ministry of SCBC calls for the establishment of what we perceive to be a much needed ministry within our local schools, one that provides for some of these most basic needs of our under privileged children… However, our hope is that God will expand our realm of influence far beyond this current arena… even unto the uttermost parts of the world… In the furtherance of this ministry we have established the following mission and purpose statements… SCBC Good Sam Ministries Mission Statement: Our mission is quite simple; it is to lend a hand by extending a little help to those who are nearest to us, those whom the Bible calls our “neighbors”… thereby obeying the commandment of Christ when He said… Go and do likewise (Luke 10:37)… SCBC Good Sam Ministries Purpose Statement: Our ultimate purpose is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ… we propose to do this through the rendering of assistance to those within our community who have material, physical and spiritual needs… which we believe will result in our having exhibited His kindness and expanding His kingdom...

Recognizing the ongoing concern over the supposed separation of church and state, we must and will tread lightly and move slowly so as to assure that this door remains open unto us… Because of this we will be able to do only as much as we are allowed to do, however, let’s remember that God can do anything… I would ask that you make this a priority in your personal prayer time… One of the benefits that we quickly recognized is that by working with our teachers and counselors it will help to assure us of the nature and validity of the need, saving precious and costly time by eliminating our own investigation of the facts concerning the need... Because of limited resources and man-hours, we will not solicit nor accept any request or recommendations for assistance unless it comes through those with whom we have partnered with and who can assure us that it is a legitimate need…

Our goal is simple; it is to make known the Lord Jesus Christ and to show His love for a hurting and hopeless world… starting in our own Jerusalem… our local community… beginning with the least amongst us… our children… We are hoping that in time, and with the Lord’s help, we can expand our ministry into more of our schools and beyond…

Why do we need a ministry like Good Sam Ministries? Because we believe that we need to have a more concentrated effort to become more involved in local missions… It is our hope that this ministry will be used by God to help establish our place of service within our local community, giving us a presence and a purpose there, ever broadening our impact and influence for Christ… Those who serve in this ministry will be charged with the challenge of discovering ways in which we can get our people out of the church services and into community service... It will be their responsibility to determine and direct our missions work within and beyond our local community… Folks, listen, there is no excuse for one child to have no coat, while our children have so many…

As in all things, we have stepped out by faith into this work to which God has shown us believing that He is willing and stands ready to provide that which we need through His people here at SCBC and others who would love to be a part of God’s work through this ministry… We have set the launch date for The Good Sam Ministries for Sunday, August 2 and at that time you will be given a brief overview of this new and exciting ministry here at SCBC… This ministry can and will be made possible only if you and I are willing to provide the necessary funding and provisions that are needed… I hope that you will prayerfully consider what God would have you to do in support of this ministry with both material and monetary donations… In the next few weeks I hope to have a listing of the items needed to help start off the upcoming school year... When it is completed I will make it available to you… May the Lord guide and bless you in your decision… Remember, even the smallest gift can be multiplied by God… But, no matter what, pray for God’s anointing upon this work...

By His Grace,

Bro. Anthony

The Saga Of Good Sam
Luke 10:25-37

SCBC Good Sam Ministries Mission Statement: Our mission is to lend a hand by extending a little help to those who are nearest to us, those whom the Bible calls our “neighbors”… thereby obeying the commandment of Christ when He said… Go and do likewise (Luke 10:37)…

SCBC Good Sam Ministries Purpose Statement: Our ultimate purpose is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ… we propose to do this through the rendering of assistance to those within our community who have material, physical and spiritual needs…

Why do we need a ministry like GOOD SAM MINISTRIES? Because we believe that we need to have a more concentrated effort to become more involved in local missions… The motive behind GOOD SAM MINISTRIES is to get our people out of the church services and into community service... It is our hope that this ministry will be used by God to help establish our place of service within our local community, giving us a presence and a purpose there, ever broadening our impact and influence for Christ… Let’s begin our message on The Saga Of Good Sam by reading his story as it was told by Jesus in Luke 10…

Luke 10:25-37 KJV… 25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? 27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. 28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. 29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? 30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, 34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. 36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? 37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise

In Luke 10, an expert in religious law posed an interesting question to Christ. He asked, “…who is my neighbor?” In response to his question, the Lord gives him one of the most recognizable and remarkable stories in all the Bible. The story is a parable that we have come to know as “The Parable Of The Good Samaritan”. It is a simple, and yet eternally profound story that tells about a Samaritan man that went out of his way to help someone in need. Because it is a parable, we know that the Lord told this story with the intention of driving home a particular lesson. There is something for us to learn from this story. In this story, the Lord Jesus reveals to us that we are a part of a much larger neighborhood than the few houses and people that live around us. As we approach the familiar story of “The Good Samaritan”, we can discover the purpose behind this parable simply by asking three questions in regards to it... First question…

I. What Do We Face In This Story?
The Lord had affirmed to the man that the two greatest commandments of Scripture were to love the Lord our God supremely, and to love our neighbors selflessly… The primary premises of the Parable of the Good Samaritan is loving and caring for others… John 13:34… A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another… Christian love means that we are to love others as Christ loves us; with a supreme, selfless, sacrificial love… Let me bring to your attention two facts concerning Christian love…
1. The Reach Of Christian Love (v.29)… But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?... Our neighbor, according to the teaching of this parable, is anyone in need that we are able to help. That may be a poor child in Troup County, or a person dying of a disease in faraway places. Both are equally our neighbors, if we understand the reach of Christian love. Christian love is color blind, culture blind, and class blind. It reaches next door, and around the world as well... We may never reach around the world, but we must reach as far as we can…
2. The Requirement Of Christian Love (vv.36-37)… 36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? 37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise… Christian love requires that we have a compassion for the plight of others and a commitment to help… I John 3:18… My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth… Christian love is neither easy nor inexpensive; it is always inconvenient, difficult, and costly... The Lord’s story brings us face to face with the fact that true Christian love requires some things from us; it requires selflessness and sacrifice… John 15:13… Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends… Do you have what it take to be a Good Sam?...

II. Where Do We Fit In This Story?
Question… Are we like the hero, the Good Samaritan? Or are we like the two religious men that passed by the suffering man? To discover where we fit in this story, we have to ask ourselves two very important questions. Notice first of all, we must examine our lives and ask…
1. Are We Indifferent To The Hurt Of Those Around Us? (vv.31-32)… 31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side… The Apostle John asked a very pointed and potent question in 1 John 3:17… But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?… How can we say we love God and not care about others?
2. Are We Involved In The Helping Of Those Around Us? (vv.33-34)… 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, 34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him… I heard about a contest that was held to find the most caring child. The winner was a four year-old boy. His next-door neighbor was an elderly man that had recently lost his wife. When the little boy saw the man sitting on the porch crying, he went over, climbed up in the man’s lap, and just sat there. Later, his mother asked the boy what he had said to the neighbor. The little boy said, “Nothing. I just helped him cry”… They will never feel the touch of your hand until they have touched your heart… DO YOU CAE ENOUGH TO CARE? Do you have what it take to be a Good Sam?...

When God placed this burden on my heart, I was overwhelmed by what I saw; I told Him that we couldn’t meet all these needs; He said He wasn’t asking us to meet all the needs, just some of the needs; I told Him we could handle some… I HOPE I WAS RIGHT… REMEMBER: He isn’t asking us to do what we can’t; He’s asking us to do what we can…

III. Who Do We Find In This Story?
In the parable of the Good Samaritan, we find an even deeper spiritual analogy… First…
1. We See A Picture Of A Lost Society (v.30)… And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead… It doesn’t take a genius to see and understand that this world is tearing itself apart; the world system is not designed to give you a better life, it’s designed to bring you down to the very depths of despair and desolation… Church, we have the hope of the world in our heart and we hold the hope of the world in our hands… We are their one and only chance of finding the path that leads to happiness and the road that leads to heaven… They are doomed if we do not show that we care about them… Like David, they cry out… Psalms 142:4… I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul… DO YOU CARE?
2. We See A Picture Of A Loving Savior (vv.33-34)… 33 he… came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, 34 And went to him… and took care of him… God cared enough to send His Son; His Son cares enough to send you… John 20:21…Then said Jesus… as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you...

For Good Sam Ministries to be successful, we need three things from you; prayer, proceeds and participation… I hope that you will prayerfully consider what God would have you to do in support of this ministry with both material and monetary donations… May the Lord guide and bless you in your decision…
Luke 10:2… Therefore said he… The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest

CONCLUSION: The story of the Good Samaritan is one with which most of us are very familiar. We likely heard it for the first time as children in Sunday School. Yet, regardless of how many times we have heard it, we must ask ourselves today if he we have ever truly heard it, in the sense of understanding its meaning. There is a point in this parable. Christ calls us from apathy and aloofness to respond to the needs of those around us. He reminds us also that the greatest need of man can’t be met through welfare and well wishes. He calls us to respond to man’s greatest need, but telling them of man’s great Savior!
